What’s In and What’s Out? Home Decor Trends for 2024

It’s time to say goodbye to some of the design styles of 2023! With the New Year coming soon, there are plenty of new and reused home decor trends out there to refresh your home for a new beginning. Keep reading to find out what’s in and what’s out for home decor trends in 2024.

What’s In

1. Warm tones

Browns, deep oranges, and earthy tones are all in right now. The focus is on introducing a more natural color palette, so that you can capture a welcoming feeling when guests walk into your space.

The fancy term to describe this earthy look is “biophilic design.” It’s all about bringing nature inside! Biophilic design has been popular for a few years now, and it doesn’t look like it will be going anywhere anytime soon. I am okay with that…I have just begun to hone my indoor plant skills, so I can keep them around without killing them.

2. Comforting curves

I am so happy to say that curved furniture is still trending! However, in 2024, you will see it mixed with contrasting elements much more than before. Slightly curved pieces are juxtaposed with straight lines, and graphic geometric patterns introduce curves without overusing this trend all over the home.

3. Victorian details

Victorian details are making a reappearance in home decor, in a loose translation that is less fussy and flowery than traditional styles from this time period. You can expect to see elegant crown molding, chevron floors, and repeating diamond shapes paired with modern millwork and clean, contemporary furniture more and more in the New Year.

4. Dark and moody color palettes

In correspondence with loosely translated Victorian influences, dark and moody color palettes are also making a comeback in 2024. Rich jewel tones, such as burgundy, emerald green, navy, and dark teal, are all popular choices for accent walls, upholstery, and accessories.

5. Artisan and Alternative

If you haven’t noticed yet, the new trends we have discussed so far are all about bringing character, warmth, and personality into a space. You can also accomplish this by using artisan and alternative materials in your decor. Fast furniture is out for 2024, as we lean into handmade styles, eclectic pieces, and unexpected materials for furniture and accessories.

What’s Out

1. Ultra modern minimalist style

Remember when creating the perfect living room was all about making it look calm, cool, collected? Sleek, clean lines were everywhere and clutter had no place in a minimalist space. In 2024, you will see much less of this ultra modern minimalist style and much more of a focus on cozy and inviting interiors.

2. Industrial design elements

As we transition to more intimate and welcoming design ideas, you will also see a shift away from rigid industrial design elements, like exposed brick and metal light fixtures. They are being replaced with soft, comfortable styles and elements that look a little less heavy visually.

3. Enough with the shiplap

I think we’ve all seen plenty of shiplap in interior design by now! Farmhouse style wall treatments have been losing favor in the last few years, and we can expect to see them gone for good in the New Year. The newest trend for wall treatments is wallpaper in bold colors and wall panel molding.

4. Grey is gone

Grey is fading out in the New Year, too. Like shiplap, it has been used in designs over and over again during the last few years. The design world has finally become bored with its overuse. By incorporating warmer color palettes and earthy neutrals, we can bring something new and interesting to the mix.

5. Sliding barn doors

As a lover of all things rustic, farmhouse, and DIY, saying goodbye to this trend is hard for me. I know sliding barn doors are not the most practical choice, but I still find them to be aesthetically pleasing and fun. I suppose we’ll just have to embrace new trends to introduce character into our homes!
