Lighting Installation Guide

Selecting lighting is one of my favorite parts of any interior design project! Of course, lighting is functional – because every space needs adequate lighting. But it also contributes to the room’s atmosphere and overall aesthetic.

When designing a space, there are 4 primary types of lighting to consider:

  1. Ambient lighting: Powerful, even illumination, intended to light the space in its entirety. (Also known as general lighting.) Recessed lighting, floor lamps, ceiling mounted fixtures, and more can all be used for ambient light.
  2. Task lighting: A light source focused on a particular area, to illuminate a particular task (or tasks). Think desk lamps, under-cabinet strip lighting, etc.
  3. Accent lighting: Bright lighting used to accent a particular area or feature in the space. For example, a long light fixture used to accentuate a high ceiling. Or upward lighting used to display a piece of artwork.
  4. Decorative lighting: Stylistic lighting that doesn’t necessarily contribute to the overall light plan of the space, but is instead added for design effect.

Pendant lights, chandeliers, and other hanging light fixtures are unique, because they can act as one (or all) of these four lighting types. Plus, come on, they’re gorgeous!

Now hold up. Before you get excited and go scrolling around the internet for your next new light fixture, there are some styling and installation tips you need to know:

Countertop Pendants

  • When installing a pendant or multiple pendants over your kitchen counter, make sure you have at least 30-40 inches of space between the top of the counter and the lowest point of the light fixtures.
  • There should be at least 24 inches of space between any two light fixtures.
  • Ensure that there is at least 12-24 inches from the outside of the light fixtures to the outside of the countertop.

Lighting Over Dining Table

Round Dining Table

  • The diameter of the dining table should be 12-18 inches larger than the selected light fixture.
  • There should be 30-36 inches of space between the top of the dining table and the lowest point of the light fixture.

Square/Rectangle Dining Table

  • There should be no less than 12 inches of space from the outside of the light fixture to the end of the dining table.
  • There should be no more than 24 inches from the outside of the light fixture to the end of the dining table.
  • There should be at least 6 inches on sides from the outside of the light fixture to the side of the dining table.
  • There should be 30-36 inches of space between the top of the dining table and the lowest point of the light fixture.
