DIY home decor for the living room

Recycle, Reuse, Repurpose

My motto for 2023 is “recycle, reuse, repurpose.” This year is all about repurposing items you already have and using them to create an entirely new look for your home. If you’re on a budget, your wallet will thank you. Repurposing items also helps to minimize harmful effects on the environment. And on top of all that, it can be so much fun! There’s nothing I love more than hunting through bins of old items in the garage and discovering new ways to use them as vintage treasures in my home.

Remember back in elementary school when you covered your paperback books to protect them? On my latest excavation, I found some awesome old books that belonged to my husband’s grandpa, and I decided to cover them.

Wrapped books as DIY home decor

I used leftover wallpaper samples to cover these books, but you can use whatever material you have lying around your house. Here are some other ideas:

  • Wrapping paper
  • Newspaper
  • Fabric (just be sure to make a sturdy backing to hold the fabric up!)
  • Paper bags from grocery shopping trips

There are tons of videos online that explain how to wrap books, so I won’t reinvent the wheel. I tied jute rope around mine to complete the look and create a beautiful, unique accessory for a console table.

This is a straightforward way to update your decor, while also reusing old items. These covers are easy to change when you decorate for the different seasons or holidays, too!

You can display your wrapped books in a variety of different ways. Put them upright or lie them flat, paper or binding side out. Personally, I prefer to keep the binding side out because it offers more opportunities to be creative. You can write expressions, include the title of the book, or even show off your art skills when the binding side is out.

Found objects as DIY home decor

Found Objects

Before you throw out old items in your storage bins, take another look. You might be surprised by what you find! Full of character and often accompanied by interesting stories, found objects are a very popular choice for DIY home decor in 2023. Like repurposed items, they can be used to put a special, vintage style spin on your home at little or no cost to you.

I came across some old glass bottles and saw their potential as a styling accessory in my home. I had already purchased foliage to add to my collection, and I paired it with these bottles to add interest. I had some old pottery jars that convey a similar rustic style as well, which coordinate nicely with the glass bottles.

When you want to change the mood in the room, an inexpensive and convenient solution is to replace the foliage in the glass bottles. I recently updated mine with softer colors that suit a winter mood.

Creativity has no limit when it comes to found objects! If the objects you find aren’t quite the right match for your home, get crafty and alter them to fit your aesthetic. Paint them to complement your color scheme, or add embellishments to dress them up.

Color Is Back

Get ready for a rainbow because color is coming back this year! Although neutral tones are still popular, bold colors are the latest trend for 2023. We’re seeing a shift toward rich jewel tones, soothing greens, timeless blues, and warm, earthy colors.

Looking for an easy DIY home project this winter? Repaint a room in your house with one of these trending colors to liven things up! It’s amazing how a fresh coat of paint in an unexpected color can completely transform a space.

I use Sherwin Williams for all of my home painting needs. Their website features plenty of helpful information, including the 2023 Color of the Year, their top recommendations, and an online visualizer to help you see how your chosen color will actually look on the walls.

These are some of my top picks:

Studio Blue Green

This vibrant shade of green breathes new life into a room! You can use it on an accent wall, or paint an entire room for a modern refresh. Green is the color of nature and comfort, so it’s the perfect choice when you want to create a peaceful environment in your home office.

Slate Tile

This timeless shade of blue is great for creating a relaxing or moody atmosphere. It offers the perfect contrast against white wainscoting and other architectural details, and it can be paired effortlessly with other colors for a casual, laid back vibe.

Iron Ore

This dark color is best used in small doses where you want to highlight features of your home and create a sense of dramatic contrast. It really makes this mudroom bench stand out!
