6 FARMHOUSE CHIC DECOR ideas FROM YOUR THRIFT STORE
Do you love thrift shopping as much as I do? Want to stay budget and eco friendly with your home décor? Then thrift and antique shopping is for you. There are many inexpensive Farmhouse chic décor finds waiting for to take home and repurpose. Classic home décor items are timeless. So how do I take thrift store finds and create unique Farmhouse chic décor? Let me share some of my favorite finds with you.
1. Wooden Shutters
Farmhouse chic décor can easily be created with old wooden shutters. There are so many repurposed ideas you can do with shutters. Currently I am working on a project creating a partition wall to cover my boiler pipes in our utility/laundry room. When I was selling at the farmers market, I repurposed shutters into display shelves using crackle paint and wooden shelves through the openings in the shutters. Shutters are also great for wall décor; all you need to do is repaint, add vases, lettering, attach baskets and other décor to spruce them up and add unique chic farmhouse feel to your walls.
2. Rustic Frames
I love shopping for picture frames. The older, shabbier, and weathered the better! In addition to the nostalgia of the antique picture frame, they are inexpensive and super easy to repurpose. Just a little sanding, paint, and “Viola” you have an updated beautiful farmhouse chic home décor. I even like to leave them without a print or picture in them to create an intriguing gallery wall.
3. Vintage hardcover books
I absolutely love shopping for vintage books! There are so many things you can do with used books the repurposing is endless. Adding a bit of jute cord and wrapping around books, placing them on mantles and coffee tables is a chic way to get that comfy cozy farmhouse look you desire. The light-colored books tend to work better for a farmhouse look, but you can repurpose darker books as well by using the text in the book to create a crafty mixed media piece of art.
4. Vintage wooden boxes and crates
I must admit I have a thing for boxes. My husband calls me the crazy box lady. I find it hard when I am at a vintage store not to pick up a wooden box of some sort. Farmhouse décor screams for wooden boxes! This Rite Cola crate I found I repurposed it and used in my bathroom to hold my toilet paper rolls and air freshener. I left it just as is and it a perfect fit for our rustic barn home. When using the smaller boxes…. think outside the box. I like to screw them into the wall to create shelves for small vases, bathroom accessories and so much more.
5. Vintage wire metal baskets
Finding awesome metal baskets is like winning the lottery for farmhouse chic home décor. The ideas for repurposing vintage metal basket infinite. I have used wire metal baskets to store my root vegetables. I added brackets and drilled them onto an old piece of reclaimed wood and hung them up on my wall in my kitchen. Adding a little verbiage with painted signs like, potatoes, onions, fruit gives it that extra farmhouse vibe. Metal baskets are great for storage, table décor and makes for special farmhouse gifts for your friends a family.
6. Vintage trunks
I absolutly love finding old wooden vintage trunks. The upcycling and repurposing possibilities for old wooden trunks is so exciting for me. I just recently purchased one from our local habitat for humaity shop for $40 which is a steal. I plan on repurposing it and adding storage like in the image above. If the trunk is in good shape I like to keep it authentic looking, but if it’s a bit worn sanding it down and painting it is also a great way to spruce up the piece for a fun farmhouse chic home décor find.
